EO4FLOOD at the ESA LIVING PLANET SYMPOSIUM 2025

EO4FLOOD ESA Living Planet Symposium 2025 | Vienna

From June 22 to 27, 2025, the ESA Living Planet Symposium 2025 took place in Vienna, having brought together more than 6500 people across the Earth observation community. Scientists, industry leaders, and space agencies from around the world gathered at the Austria Centre in Vienna to discuss and interact on topics that included the growing importance of satellite data in addressing global challenges, from climate change and food security to urban development and disaster resilience.

Most of the EO4FLOOD team (CNR, RSS-HYDRO, HYDRO-Matters, GMV, and others) was present in many of the sessions, presentations and poster, contributing to discussions on how satellite data and hydrological expertise can be integrated to support both research and ESA initiatives.

On day 1 (Monday, 23rd), the team was already in full mode at the ESA’s Hydrology Science Cluster meeting, organised by Espen Volden, Karim Douch and Artemis Vrettou. On this session, our project coordinator, Angelica Tarpanelli (CNR), provided an excellent overview of EO4FLOOD. Afterwards. there was a lively discussion about the future of hydrology at ESA, where Angelica provided her insights on hydrology priorities and Jérôme Benveniste (ex-ESA and advisor of EO4FLOOD) remarked the importance of translating research into real-world applications.

Day 3 (Wednesday, 25th) was the big day for the “Monitoring and predicting surface water and flood dynamics” session! This session was co-convened by our project coordinator, Angelica, and our scientific leader, Guy Schumann (RSS-Hydro) among other top researchers. That afternoon, during the poster’s sessions, Angelica presented a poster of the EO4FLOOD project, which gather lots of interest by the scientific community.
